About the role
As an Engineering Lead - Digital Applications at Tyro, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering the digital experiences that our merchants interact with every day. You will be responsible for the engineering leadership, operational excellence, and delivery of Tyro's onboarding, merchant self-service, and mobile application ecosystems. This includes ownership of the engineering capability supporting the Merchant App, Merchant Portal, Customer Hub, Tyro Web Frameworks, Tyro Design Library and Mobile Applications.
You will create a safe and inclusive environment where engineers can grow, learn and thrive, while ensuring teams are equipped with the skills, practices, tools and frameworks required to deliver secure, scalable and high-quality customer experiences.
Working closely with Product Managers, Delivery Leads, Designers and business stakeholders, you will help shape the product strategy and technology roadmap, balancing customer needs, business priorities, technical sustainability and operational excellence. This role requires a strong combination of technical leadership, people leadership, delivery accountability and stakeholder management, contributing directly to Tyro's growth and customer experience objectives.
You will also be accountable for the operational health, resilience and security of Tyro's digital platforms. This includes ensuring robust monitoring, alerting, incident management, operational readiness and support processes are in place across all customer-facing applications and services.
Working closely with Engineering, Product, Security and Operations teams, you will drive a culture of operational excellence where reliability, maintainability and customer experience are considered first-class engineering outcomes.
What you'll do
Lead and develop multiple engineering teams delivering Tyro's digital platforms, including Merchant App, Merchant Portal, Customer Hub and supporting services.
Partner with Product, Design and Delivery to define strategy, prioritise work and deliver exceptional customer experiences.
Drive engineering excellence through modern software development practices, automation, testing, observability and operational excellence.
Guide technical and architectural decisions, balancing rapid delivery with scalability, resilience and long-term maintainability.
Champion secure, reliable and accessible digital platforms, embedding a "you build it, you run it" culture.
Coach, mentor and grow engineers, fostering an inclusive, high-performing and collaborative team environment.
Build strong relationships across Technology and the broader business, communicating delivery progress, managing priorities and aligning outcomes to Tyro's strategy.
What you'll bring
Proven experience leading software engineering teams in a product-led technology organisation.
Demonstrated success delivering customer-facing web and mobile applications at scale.
Strong experience with modern software development practices, including AI backed agile delivery, CI/CD, automated testing and cloud-native architectures.
Experience managing engineers across multiple product domains and technology stacks.
Strong technical background across web applications, APIs, microservices and mobile technologies.
Experience working closely with Product Managers, Designers and Delivery Leads in cross-functional teams.
Strong understanding of system design, scalability, security and operational excellence.
Excellent stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills.
Strong coaching, mentoring and people leadership capability.
Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on leadership and execution.
Experience operating and supporting customer-facing applications in production environments.
Strong understanding of site reliability engineering (SRE), observability and operational excellence practices.
Experience implementing monitoring, alerting and incident management frameworks.
Knowledge of resilience engineering, disaster recovery and business continuity practices.
Experience managing operational risk, security controls and compliance obligations in regulated environments.
Demonstrated ability to balance feature delivery with platform stability, reliability and technical sustainability.
Desirable
Experience in payments, banking, fintech or highly regulated environments.
Experience with onboarding, customer acquisition or digital self-service journeys.
Experience with design systems, frontend platforms and mobile engineering practices.
Experience leading teams responsible for customer-facing digital channels and shared engineering platforms.
Familiarity with technology risk management, security controls and compliance requirements.
