About the role
Help shape the intelligence behind how Tyro serves its merchants. We’re looking for an Agentic AI Engineering Lead who’s excited about turning cutting-edge AI into real outcomes for thousands of Australian businesses. In this role, you’ll build and own the platform that powers safe, autonomous agents across onboarding, servicing, and cross-sell - and you’ll see your work ship directly into our merchant channels and the tools our teams use every day.
You move with urgency, care deeply about quality, and know how to instrument everything so we can learn fast and continuously improve. You’ll guide the engineering that takes agents from prototype to rock-solid production services at scale - systems that merchants and Tyro teams can rely on 24/7.
You’ll work shoulder-to-shoulder with Product, Data, Security, Risk, Operations and Compliance to deliver measurable improvements in merchant experience, time-to-value, and unit economics. And along the way, you’ll grow and lead an inclusive, high-performing team that reflects Tyro’s values
What you'll do
Agentic AI Strategy & Collaboration
Define and champion Tyro’s agentic AI vision, strategy, and multi-quarter roadmap.
Partner with Product, Data, and Operations to uncover and prioritise the highest-value opportunities - from merchant support to onboarding and operations automation.
Build the patterns, guardrails, and reference designs that make it easy for delivery squads to adopt agentic AI safely and effectively.
Align cross-functional teams on ROI, evaluation methods, and success metrics for each use case.
Architecture & Platform Foundations
Own the core platform for agent orchestration - including planning, tool selection, multi-step workflows, RAG, memory/state, and tool registry.
Design APIs, SDKs, and integration contracts for embedding agents into customer-facing products and internal systems.
Build out test harnesses, offline/online evaluation suites, and sandboxes for agents, prompts, and tools.
Create end-to-end observability: traces, prompts, tokens, costs, latency, and safety telemetry.
Ensure data flows are secure, compliant, and built for safe iteration and rollout.
Reliability, Safety & Operations
Set and meet SLOs for reliability, accuracy, latency, and cost and lead operational readiness, on-call, and incident response for AI runtime services.
Run clear, blameless post-incident reviews and drive lasting improvements across platform and practices.
Build safety into every stage: design, development, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
Product Delivery & Ways of Working
Work alongside squads to deliver secure, resilient agentic capabilities that solve real merchant and operational problems.
Embed engineering best practices - trunk-based development, CI/CD, IaC, automated testing, continuous evaluation, and safe progressive delivery.
Identify opportunities to improve engineering throughput and developer experience; track and improve lead time, change fail rate, and recovery time.
People & Team Development
Hire, mentor, and develop a diverse group of engineers across software, ML/LLM, and platform specialties.
Run thoughtful 1:1s, build growth plans, and foster a culture of ownership, learning, and high performance.
Communicate clearly and confidently with technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
What you'll bring
Experience leading engineering teams building and operating production LLM/agentic systems or applied AI products.
Strong technical depth in Python, distributed systems, and cloud (AWS preferred), plus comfort with containers/Kubernetes, CI/CD, IaC, and observability.
Hands-on experience with LLM orchestration and retrieval (prompts, tools, planning, RAG, vector DBs, embeddings, caching).
Familiarity with agent frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, etc.) and evaluation/testing methodologies for AI systems.
Understanding of AI safety, guardrails, red-teaming, prompt-injection defenses, and content filtering.
A track record of incident management, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement in high-availability environments.
Ability to understand and optimise cost, performance, and reliability; experience with AI unit economics and cost telemetry.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills across engineering, product, risk, compliance, and operations.
Bonus: fintech or payments experience, exposure to risk/fraud detection, and familiarity with data governance, privacy, and secure development practices.
