About the role
As the Engineering Manager - Android at Tyro, you will lead an Android engineering team that builds and scales the platforms powering Tyro’s merchant experiences on EFTPOS machine and mobile. You’ll balance delivery, operational excellence, platform strategy, and people leadership, acting as both a delivery leader and a people manager.
You’ll own a product, component, or technology area within Tyro’s platform ecosystem and work closely with Product, Design, and Operations to define and deliver outcomes that matter to our merchants and to the business. A key part of the role is driving a “build once, run across different surfaces” mindset – designing and evolving shared capabilities that can be leveraged across multiple apps, channels, and experiences.
What you'll do
Team & People Leadership
Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers to deliver high‑quality, maintainable software.
Manage performance, provide regular feedback, and support the career growth of each team member.
Build a high‑performing, inclusive, and collaborative team culture grounded in accountability and continuous learning.
Create an environment where engineers are empowered to take ownership and do their best work.
Delivery & Execution
Own end‑to‑end delivery for your team’s Android and platform components, from discovery through to production.
Partner closely with Product and Design to define problems, shape solutions, and prioritise work according to customer and business impact.
Plan and track delivery, manage dependencies, clear blockers, and communicate status, risks, and trade‑offs to stakeholders.
Continuously improve engineering and delivery processes (e.g. Agile/Kanban, CI/CD, testing, release practices) to maximise sustainable throughput and quality.
Technical Leadership, Platform Thinking & Operational Excellence
Provide technical leadership for initiatives: participate in design reviews, guide architectural decisions, and ensure technical work aligns to platform strategy.
Champion platform thinking:
Design reusable components, SDKs, and services that can be coded once and used across multiple surfaces(e.g. different apps, experiences, or channels).
Balance short‑term feature delivery with long‑term platform health, scalability, and maintainability.
Ensure robust operational practices: on‑call, monitoring, alerting, incident management, and defect management.
Drive continuous improvements to system health, performance, security, and reliability for Android and related backend integrations.
Represent your team in technical forums and collaborate with other engineering leaders to shape broader technical direction.
Thought Leadership
Act as a thought leader for EFTPOS and mobile at Tyro:
Stay across industry trends, platform changes, and best practices in Android development and mobile architecture.
Influence and evolve Tyro’s mobile and platform strategy, standards, and guidelines.
Evangelise best practices in mobile engineering, platform design, observability, and automation across teams.
Communicate clearly and persuasively with technical and non‑technical stakeholders, framing decisions in terms of risk, value, and trade‑offs.
What you'll bring
Strong Android development experience (Kotlin/Java, Android SDK, modern Android architecture patterns).
Proven experience delivering and operating Android applications in production.
Payments or financial services domain knowledge, including familiarity with concepts such as transaction processing, settlement, terminals, or risk and compliance - is desirable.
Experience with modern engineering practices: CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, feature flags, monitoring/observability, and secure coding practices.
Leadership & Judgment
Experience as a people manager of Software/Android engineers, with direct responsibility for both people and delivery outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to Translate strategy into clear technical and delivery roadmaps.
Make sound technical and product trade‑offs that balance speed, quality, and long‑term platform health.
Proactively identify risks and issues, and mitigate or escalate them with data and clear rationale.
A strong bias towards collaboration, ownership, and continuous learning, both for yourself and your team.
