About the role
As Head of Technology, In-Store, you will lead the strategy, engineering and operational excellence across the platforms that power Tyro’s in-person payments experience. This includes our payment devices, terminal fleet management, merchant applications and the integration ecosystem that connects with 700+ POS partners.
This is a high-impact leadership role at the heart of how thousands of Australian merchants engage with Tyro every day. You’ll be responsible for ensuring our in-store technology is secure, scalable, compliant and merchant-friendly — while modernising platforms and accelerating innovation across devices, APIs and partner integrations.
Reporting to the CTO and leading a team of approximately 35 (with 4 direct reports), you’ll play a critical role in evolving our in-store payments ecosystem and delivering differentiated, high-performing payment experiences at scale.
What you'll do
Define and execute the technology strategy for Tyro’s in-store payments ecosystem, aligned to company-wide OKRs.
Lead the engineering and operational performance of payment devices, terminal management platforms and merchant applications.
Modernise Tyro’s terminal platform to improve performance, stability, security and lifecycle management.
Evolve and innovate Tyro’s integration frameworks, APIs and SDKs to enable scalable, high-quality POS partner integrations.
Accelerate partner certification processes to reduce cycle times while maintaining rigorous quality and compliance standards.
Drive uptime, transaction success and overall ecosystem reliability across in-store payments.
Embed strong engineering practices to improve quality, maintainability and delivery velocity across device and mobile platforms.
Own risk management and compliance across device software, mobile applications and in-store platforms, ensuring alignment with APRA, PCI-DSS and scheme requirements.
Collaborate closely with Product, Data and Operations to deliver customer-centric innovation, including AI and automation opportunities.
Build, mentor and inspire high-performing leaders and teams, fostering accountability, autonomy and a strong performance culture.
What you'll bring
Extensive senior technology leadership experience within payments, fintech or another regulated environment.
Deep expertise across device ecosystems, payment terminals or embedded systems, with a strong understanding of integration architectures.
Experience leading large-scale, mission-critical platforms with high uptime and transaction performance requirements.
Strong knowledge of compliance and risk frameworks relevant to payments (e.g. PCI-DSS, APRA, card schemes).
Proven ability to modernise legacy platforms and drive technology transformation at scale.
Experience working with external technology partners and managing complex integration ecosystems.
A strong customer mindset, with a track record of delivering secure, intuitive and high-performing payment or merchant experiences.
Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at executive level and align cross-functional teams.
