About the role
The Engineering Lead - Cloud Infrastructure is responsible for leading the delivery, reliability and ongoing evolution of Tyro's core infrastructure foundations across on-premises datacentres and AWS.
This is a technical leadership role for someone who is comfortable being close to the work. You will lead a team of experienced platform engineers while also staying hands-on in shaping designs, solving complex infrastructure problems, guiding implementation and helping the team deliver safely in a regulated, high-availability environment.
You will bring strong infrastructure and AWS capability, sound engineering judgement and the ability to turn business, operational and regulatory needs into practical technical outcomes. This role suits a leader who enjoys coaching strong engineers and stepping into the detail where it helps move work forward.
The platforms owned by this team underpin critical systems at Tyro and require a strong focus on stability, security, risk management and availability.
This role carries accountability for infrastructure reliability, operational risk, change quality and the ongoing uplift of the Cloud Infrastructure domain across the organisation.
What you'll do
Technical Leadership & Delivery
Lead the Cloud Infrastructure team to deliver reliable, secure and scalable platform outcomes across on-premises infrastructure, hybrid connectivity and AWS foundations.
Stay close to the work - shaping designs, reviewing implementation approaches, unblocking complex problems and contributing hands-on where it adds value.
Translate business priorities, regulatory obligations and architectural guardrails into clear technical plans and executable work.
Balance delivery, platform health, resilience and risk reduction while maintaining high engineering standards.
Work alongside senior engineers on complex infrastructure problems, particularly across AWS, networking, hybrid connectivity, Kubernetes networking and automation.
Use your experience to unblock engineers, accelerate decision making and guide the team toward practical, supportable solutions.
Own outcomes for availability, resilience and operational stability across infrastructure platforms.
Maintain a strong operational risk and compliance posture, ensuring change governance, regulatory obligations (including APRA CPS234 and CPS230) and audit requirements are consistently met.
Continuous Improvement & Automation
Drive automation that improves safety, repeatability, reliability and operational efficiency, while reducing toil for the team.
Champion Infrastructure as Code, automated testing and deployment practices, and engineering habits that improve quality and speed while maintaining strong control.
Ensure operational documentation, runbooks and recovery practices are practical, current and useful during both steady-state operations and incidents.
Team Leadership
Lead, coach and develop a team of platform engineers, including senior engineers, creating clarity on priorities while fostering accountability, trust and shared high standards.
Inspire the team through technical credibility as well as people leadership - supporting engineers with context, feedback, mentoring and active problem solving.
Create an environment of psychological safety, ownership and continuous learning.
Support hiring, onboarding and capability uplift as the platform and organisation evolve.
Technology Landscape & Platform Context
The team works across a broad, business-critical technology landscape spanning on-premises infrastructure, hybrid connectivity and AWS foundations. You do not need to be the deepest expert in every domain on day one, but strong hands-on capability across core infrastructure, cloud platforms and automation will set you up well for success.
On-premises infrastructure and hybrid connectivity: Datacentres, enterprise compute, storage and physical networking, along with connectivity between on-premises environments, AWS and critical external partners.
Cloud and platform foundations: Core AWS services, cloud networking, DNS, network security controls, and Kubernetes networking, including service mesh technologies such as Istio.
Infrastructure automation and delivery: Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines and engineering practices that support safe, repeatable, well-governed change.
What you'll bring
Experience leading engineers in complex infrastructure or platform environments, with the ability to coach, influence and lift delivery standards.
Strong hands-on background in infrastructure and platform engineering, with confidence working in the detail, making technical decisions and contributing directly where needed.
Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including balancing competing priorities and translating complex technical considerations into clear, practical recommendations.
A pragmatic, outcomes-focused approach to solving complex problems, with the ability to assess risk, navigate constraints and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions in regulated environments.
A collaborative leadership style that supports continuous improvement, learning and team uplift through influence and example.
Experience operating in regulated, mission-critical or high-availability environments, with an appreciation for resilience, operational risk and disciplined change.
You are likely to be successful in this role if you bring capability across several of the following areas:
Enterprise infrastructure such as compute, storage, and networking
AWS infrastructure, networking, and hybrid connectivity patterns
Kubernetes networking concepts and service mesh technologies such as Istio
Infrastructure automation, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD practices
Performance indicators
Operational Risk & Compliance
Infrastructure changes follow defined change management processes. Regulatory and audit requirements are met, with strong technical judgement applied to risk and control decisions.
Reliability & Availability
Infrastructure platforms consistently meet or exceed availability and performance targets. Incidents are well managed, root causes are addressed, and resilience improves over time.
Delivery & Execution
Infrastructure initiatives are delivered safely and predictably, with strong technical leadership, minimal business disruption and increasing levels of automation.
Technical Leadership
The team delivers high-quality engineering outcomes with clear technical direction, sound decision making and strong stakeholder confidence.
Team Health & Capability
A high-performing, engaged team with strong technical capability, clear ownership and positive stakeholder feedback.
