About the role
The Principal Engineer is a visionary technical leader, charged with shaping and owning the technical architecture of the platform (or platform domain) at a strategic level.
This pivotal role sets the direction for platform evolution, ensuring that every decision aligns with business and product objectives, and positions Tyro at the forefront of technology innovation.
The Principal Engineer crafts platform capabilities that are robust, scalable, and intuitive, always keeping the end-user experience at the heart of design. By championing reusable and accessible platform services, they set the standard for technical excellence.
Acting as a trusted advisor and technical thought leader, the Principal Engineer works hand-in-hand with Engineering, Delivery, and Product leaders, as well as cross-functional teams, to embed industry best practices, operational resilience, and a culture of continual learning and improvement.
Their influence extends beyond code - they mentor, inspire, and empower teams to reach new heights of collaboration and innovation.

What you'll do
Define and own the technical architecture of the platform (or platform domain), ensuring scalability, reusability, and accessibility.
Establish consumption patterns for platform services, ensuring ease of use and standardisation.
Align platform capabilities with end-user experience requirements, defining scope and boundaries in collaboration with other platforms.
Define tactics and strategy to support platform evolution in line with business and product goals.
Provide technical oversight on solutions leveraging platform services, ensuring alignment with platform strategy.
Govern the use and extension of platform services, ensuring consistency and maintainability.
Balance day-to-day engineering decisions with long-term architectural direction, ensuring adherence to target states and technology principles.
Establish and maintain default platform technologies and techniques.
Govern implementation and operational considerations to drive a sustainable platform evolution strategy.
Foster a culture of architectural excellence, ensuring technical disciplines and principles are well-understood and applied across teams.
Collaborate with other Principal Engineers and Architecture to maintain Tyro’s enterprise-wide architectural standards.
Drive standardisation and reusability, ensuring platform evolution balances scalability with pragmatic implementation.
Facilitate continuous learning, feedback loops, and architectural improvements across platforms.
Work alongside Squads to ensure successful delivery of new platform features and updates.
Serve as a trusted technical partner within cross-functional squads, guiding teams on best practices in system design and operational readiness.
Support troubleshooting and resolution of complex technical challenges, fostering a culture of collaboration and problem-solving.
Partner with Delivery Leads to break down technical requirements, ensuring practical and efficient project execution.
Identify and mitigate technical dependencies, risks, and blockers, driving proactive problem-solving.
Support teams in refining backlog items, ensuring technically sound and scalable solutions.
What you'll bring
Strong experience in software development, system design, and technical leadership.
Excellent problem-solving, organisational, and analytical skills, including root cause analysis and post-incident reviews.
Expertise in cloud-based architectures, microservices, and distributed systems.
Experience in incident management, platform reliability, and operational best practices.
Deep understanding of agile methodologies, DevOps principles, and CI/CD pipelines.
Strong collaboration and communication skills to influence across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Passion for mentoring, coaching, and fostering technical growth within teams.
