About the role
The Principal Engineer is a visionary technical leader responsible for defining and governing the technical architecture across Tyro's end-to-end payments ecosystem. This role owns technology direction at an enterprise level, ensuring architectural decisions optimise the complete payments lifecycle - from merchant payment acceptance through to payment orchestration, switching, authorisation and processing, to settlement, reconciliation, reporting and back-office capabilities.
This role requires deep technical breadth across multiple technology domains and payment systems, with the ability to understand, influence and evolve complex interactions between platforms, products and engineering teams. The Principal Engineer also drives the adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices to accelerate software delivery, improve quality, automate operations and enhance platform resilience across the software development lifecycle.
The Principal Engineer establishes the long-term technical strategy for the platform, ensuring every architectural decision aligns with Tyro's business strategy, product vision and operational objectives. They champion reusable platform capabilities, engineering standards and architectural consistency that enable multiple product teams to deliver at scale.
As a trusted technical advisor, the Principal Engineer partners with Engineering and Product leadership across the organisation to solve complex technical challenges, shape technology strategy and drive investment decisions across multiple engineering domains. The Principal Engineer provides technical leadership across the complete payments value chain rather than within a single product or technology domain. Success in this role requires demonstrated experience designing, integrating and evolving distributed payment platforms spanning multiple business capabilities and engineering disciplines.
Beyond technical direction, the Principal Engineer mentors engineers and engineering leaders, fosters architectural excellence and cultivates a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and AI-enabled engineering, enabling teams to deliver secure, resilient and scalable technology at speed.
